"And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear
the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD
your God with all your heart and with all your soul." ~Deuteronomy 10:12
Help, aid, and assist. All three of these
words imply the same act: service. Every day, an occasion presents itself
for someone to help another individual(s). It doesn’t matter how big or small
an act of service turns out to be, service is service. When you tutor a peer,
go on a mission trip, or become a staff member at a summer camp, each act of
service has the same outcome: fulfillment, peace, and happiness.
When I was first told about summer camp, I
was about 14 years old and wanted to go but other things always seemed to
interfere. Either I was helping in VBS with different churches, doing summer
school, or simply visiting family around the country. Years went by and I was
no longer interested in being a camper at PSR but rather a staff member so I
could serve to the best of my abilities. I talked to several individuals and
asked their opinion and thoughts about the camp and received positive comments
which made me feel secure. I told myself that, next year, I would do everything
I could to apply and asked God to help me succeed in my plan for Him.
Months went by, and I soon forgot the
promise I made to myself and God. Then one day, I saw several camps lined up at
school (La Sierra University) and was curious as to what was going on. A friend of mine told me that
the whole week was dedicated to camp recruitment week and missions. I
immediately realized that although I had forgotten the promise I had made, God
hadn't forget. I applied, interviewed, prayed to God that if it was His will,
He would help me see through this plan and then began the hardest part of the
journey: the waiting. I waited for what seemed like years, but was actually
only two months, until the day I got home and I saw a letter addressed to me
from PSR. In a rush, I opened and scanned through it and I read the words that
I now realize changed my life, “We are pleased to offer you a position for the
2014 summer camp season at PSR.” I signed and turned in my contract in the next
few days and then prayed again that this was the way God wanted me to go and that
this opportunity would bless me.
Summer came and I took it all in. Day by
day, I was shown God’s grace and served to the best of my abilities. Then the
summer was gone but God had showed me what an impact I had made and how much of
an impact PSR made on me. So much is possible when we are simply willing to
serve and allow God to use us in different ways. Often times we say we are
going to help this person or give money to another, but we never come through
on our words. We only talk about taking action but never accomplish it. Ask God
for help and He will not only help you talk the talk, but take it a step
further and help you walk the walk.
